Theme for the retreat:
In 1945 Albert Day, a Methodist pastor, relinquished his pastorate to accept a position with the National Board of Evangelism of the Methodist Church. He came to Nashville, Tenn. to develop a new program of spiritual growth and personal evangelism to make religion real. Albert Day called his new program “New Life Movement.” Delegates to the initial planning meeting included Methodist ministers and laity who met at Albion College in Albion, Mich. from July 31-August 9, 1945. Approximately 100 persons participated in this retreat.
After many days of presentations, discussions and prayer, the Disciplined Order of Christ (DOC) was born. Albert Day was the leader, the inspiration and founder of this Movement. Dr. Day wrote the book Discipline and Discovery and in 1947 Discipline and Discovery was published by Upper Room Books and served as the guidebook for the DOC as well as a popular devotional book for the general public. Every new DOC member is encouraged to read it. The book has sold over 300,000 copies. Discipline and Discovery is currently out of print, but remains the core document for our Order. (Fortunately, our region has an abundant supply on hand!) In the years following he wrote additional books and articles and helped in building the DOC organization structure and guiding the spiritual movement.
It seems like an opportune time to spend a few days getting BTTB – back to the basics – of these practical disciplines that guide our daily lives and also serve as a way to model Christ to the world, since Jesus embodied all of them. The eight disciplines are: Obedience, Simplicity, Humility, Frugality, Generosity, Truthfulness, Purity, and Charity.
If you have a copy of Discipline and Discovery on hand, you may want to reread the first three chapters. Copies of Discipline and Discovery will be available at the retreat. Bring a Bible as well as something to use for note taking. The four presentations (with two disciplines apiece) are based on Danny Morris’ Discipline and Discovery Workbook (also out of print!). Each presentation will include group exercises and other activities to help us rediscover these spiritual companions. It should be a great time together!
